While it is often considered a simple day trip from Athens (it is), this island deserves a night or two to truly relax into the dreamy Mediterranean life that we all daydream about. Hydra’s picture-perfect port could not welcome you in a sweeter way. Ferry in on the upper-deck for gorgeous views of the colorful port, winding alleys of bougainvillea wrapped houses and donkeys strolling the cobbled streets to make their daily deliveries. As a car-free island, you just imagine a “simple” way of life which allows you to explore at a slower, peaceful pace.
Avoid a map or itinerary as it simply isn’t necessary. Once you arrive, it is a mere stroll from the ferry to pass the donkey post where you should head behind the main port strip of shops and cafes. Stop for a coffee and a little something sweet to enjoy before you wander through the streets to find yourself lost in a maze of floral draped homes in every shade of pastel. No matter which direction you meander, you will happen upon an original pharmacy from 1890 that is operated by the same family.
As you head toward the west side of the island on foot, you will find lots of little beaches and cocktail bars. However, a light walk even further to this stunning restaurant for lunch is a must. You can not go wrong with anything you order, but you must order the dolmades, tuna and calamari - all from the starters making them great for sharing.
There are plenty of water taxis at the port that can take you to various beaches around the island - a perfect way to get away from life with a refreshing dip and nap in the sun.
Before you return to your ferry, make a stop in this alley for a gyro and then a freddo espresso sketo (iced espresso plain or no sugar) where you can easily spend at least an hour people-watching and taking in all that Hydra inspires in art and culture.
